Astronomer and mathematician Johannes Kepler (1571 – 1630) taught classes from 1612 to 1624 at the university. It was in Linz where he discovered the 3rd law of planetary motion (1618) and completed the work on his Harmocies Mundi, one of his most significant books. To honor his important achievements, your future university is named after him. Currently the university does have four departments: Law, Science & Technology, Social & Economics, and the youngest one, the Medical department.

In total, JKU counts 19.300 students (2013) and is the largest campus university in Austria. One out of 9 students comes from abroad, so it is a very international university. The campus are comprises 364,000 m² in total and is located around a pond, our famous "Uniteich".
