Linz is the capital of the province of Upper Austria and the third largest city of the country - currently Linz is home to about 200.000 people. In former times, Linz was known as a dusty steel city, because of the large steel manufacturer ‘Voestalpine AG’. With the help of improved pollution control and a lot of initiatives in the cultural area (Ars Electronica, Lentos, Pflasterspektakel), the city was able to completely rebuild its image. Today, Linz is the second largest economic center of Austria and is growing steadily. The city is located directly at the river Danube, and offers three tram lines and several bus lines to bring you wherever you need to go.

The city is home to 8 universities, providing learning facilities for about 30.000 students in total. Our university, Johannes Kepler Universität, is teaching about 21.000 students in the fields of social sciences, law, technology and medicine. In total, Linz offers a broad range of disciplines to study, for example architecture, theology, social management and the newest discipline, human medicine.

Linz offers plenty of activities and events, so you can be sure you won't get bored here. The highlights are the christmas markets in December, Uhrfahraner Markt twice a year, Pflasterspektakel, Klangwolke, Höhenrausch etc. Besides that, there are many restaurants that will fulfill your every culinary need: Besides traditional Austrian inns, you can find Mediterranean, Asian, African or American restaurants to make sure you don't have to starve. Linz also has a vibrant nightlife, offering bars and clubs for every music and drink preferences. Make sure you attend as many as you can during your time here ;-)
